Walkable is a GovTech early stage digital product which is designed to help cities’ municipalities wisely plan and invest in urban accessibility interventions.
The concept of this product is created, tested and validated as a part of the ELABORATOR EU project.
Results
15 of 18 experts consider WalkAble as a valuable or the main product for urban planning in their cities.
2 cities offered their participation in further development of WalkAble.

Challenge
It takes months to decide which urban interventions to implement. This process is complicated due to lack of urban accessibility data, different tools in use, a lot of manual work, and many stakeholders involved.
Background
AMAT has already developed an IT model for urban data analysis and interventions’ impact prediction, and collected necessary accessibility urban data in Milan.
During the ELABORATOR project AMAT tested the model on two Olympic interventions. It has proven it’s effectiveness and is ready to become a product for users.
Design process
We’ve done 6 expert interviews, analyzed existing ecosystem and decision making process regarding urban accessibility interventions implementation.
The main user needs which WalkAble would address are:
- Analyze a city area for accessibility interventions by different criteria.
- Prioritize and select accessibility interventions for the proposal by their impact, budget needed, and other criteria.
- Share and discuss the proposal with other stakeholders on the early stage and other stages of the project development. Update the concept accordingly.
We facilitated a set of co-creation sessions with the AMAT team to define a business-model and scaling strategy, a pilot scope of functionality, a user flow, and a brand and UI style.
We created an interactive prototype of the product and organized group and individual tests with urban experts and development team.

As a part of ELABORATOR project activities we organized a workshop with experts from 12 cities, where together with the client we presented the concept of the product, discussed feedback and run a survey.
Impact
WalkAble could have medium or huge impact on existing planning process and become a valuable tool. It could simplify and speed up the process, and help to evaluate urban scenarios.
In further development it’s important to consider integration in to the existing systems in a way to be simple and usable.
